Calculating Court Deadlines
How to count days correctly so you never miss a deadline.
Common counting rules
Most courts don't count the day of the event that starts the clock. If the last day falls on a weekend or court holiday, the deadline usually moves to the next court day. Some rules add days when papers are served by mail.
Protect yourself
- Read the specific rule for each deadline.
- Write every deadline on a calendar with reminders a week and two days ahead.
- File early; e-filing systems can fail at the last minute.
