Common Case Types
Child Support Basics
How child support is calculated, changed and enforced.
How it's set
Every state uses guidelines, usually based on both parents' incomes, the number of children, parenting time, and costs like health insurance and childcare.
Changing an order
You can ask to modify support after a substantial change such as job loss or a big income change. Until a court changes the order, the old amount stays owed.
Enforcement
State child support agencies can collect through wage withholding, tax refund intercepts, and license suspension, often at little or no cost.
