Criminal vs. Civil Cases
The key differences, including your right to a lawyer.
Civil cases
Disputes between people or organizations, usually about money or rights. The standard of proof is typically "preponderance of the evidence." There's generally no right to a free lawyer.
Criminal cases
The government prosecutes someone for a crime, and proof must be beyond a reasonable doubt. If you face possible jail time and can't afford a lawyer, you have a right to a public defender. ProSe Law is built for civil matters.
