Courts & Types
Immigration Court Basics
How removal proceedings work and why legal help matters.
The basics
Immigration courts are run by the U.S. Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review. There's no right to a free government-appointed lawyer in most cases.
Key points
Keep your address updated with the court; missing a hearing can result in a removal order. Use EOIR's online case status tool, and look for nonprofit legal providers.
