Courtroom Etiquette
How to speak to a judge and present yourself well.
The basics
- Dress neatly.
- Stand when the judge enters and when you speak, unless told otherwise.
- Address the judge as "Your Honor."
- Don't interrupt the judge or the other side; you'll get your turn.
- Speak to the judge, not to the other party.
- Turn your phone off.
Be brief and organized
Judges have full calendars. Lead with what you want and the two or three facts that support it, then offer your documents.
