Case Progression
How a Hearing Works
The usual order of events in a court hearing.
Typical order
- The case is called and parties identify themselves.
- The person who brought the case presents first: statement, evidence, witnesses.
- The other side may ask questions (cross-examination).
- The other side presents its case.
- Each side may sum up briefly.
- The judge decides, either on the spot or later in writing.
Tips
Keep exhibits in the order you'll use them. Answer questions directly. If you don't understand a question, say so.
